There is much discussion about the integration of the computer and communications industries, but within an organization, two departments, IT and Marketing, ______________________________. The one was immersed in technical know-how and systems maintenance, the other in a mostly outward orientation towards markets and customers. That's been acceptable up to a point but the new world of electronic commerce demands a much more integrated approach. IT is no longer just an enabler. It becomes a primary route to market. It cannot stay in a back office concerning itself with systems maintenance or arcane developments. It has to come out directly into the market place. In a similar fashion, marketers must become technically literate. They cannot just concentrate on being creative and developing innovative advertisements. They have to come to terms with the electronic information age and learn how to be innovative in that environment too.
